Have a Happy 4th of July, everyone! The photos in

Have a Happy 4th of July, everyone! The photos in this post will be a bit misleading, as our city’s Freedom Celebration happened this past weekend. It’s not a very publicized event, but nonetheless, people swarmed Pere Marquette Park in Ste. Genevieve to set up picnics and socialize for a couple of hours before the show, as the Muny Band played “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Then there’s the fireworks show, where people got to spread out and lay directly under the show. Pretty special!

If you’re looking for something special to do this weekend, check out the Independence Day Celebration hosted by French Colonial America and Ron and Justine Rayfield (@justineybeanie). Starting at noon, George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette will address the audience, the Declaration of Independence will be read by State Representative Bryant Wolfin, and President Washington will cut cake with a sword.

Just wait for the ducks 🦆

Homesteading is something that happens right in downtown Ste. Gen. You can keep up to six hens in your backyard, and many people raise bees. Harold’s Famous Bee Co., known for the bee venom extract it sells, keeps its bees right in the heart of downtown.

There’s also a wild hive that’s taken over the steeple of the Catholic church. Beekeepers retrieved four different swarms from the church steps this year.

Missouri is full of surprises. One of the many thi

Missouri is full of surprises. One of the many things you may not know about it is that it’s responsible for one of the greatest art movements in America’s history. Led by Thomas Hart Benton (the Diego Rivera of the United States and a Kansas City native), this army of Regionalist painters was mobilized by the New Deal to paint murals in municipal buildings across America.

During that time, Ste. Genevieve became a boot camp for forging Regionalist artists. The Ste. Genevieve Art Colony (1932 to 1940) was started by two women, Aimee Schweig and Jesse Beard-Rickley, was taught by Thomas Hart Benton and Joe Jones, and produced cohorts responsible for almost 100 municipal works of art spanning the Midwest.

With Ste. Gen being a center for the creation of Regionalist work, it only makes sense that we should host the paintings of the most notable New Regionalist painter working today, Bryan Haynes (@artbybryanhaynes), with the opening of a new gallery in town, the Two Rivers Gallery (73 N. Main St.). Named after the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, this gallery will shine a spotlight on the unique work happening in this area of the country; work that speaks to the rich history of this area and how that history is shaping our future.

The gallery will have its Grand Opening tomorrow (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) in conjunction with the 4th Friday Art Walk. Not only will you be able to see this and the work of local artists around town, but you can visit work created by the Art Colony as well at Silver Sycamore Gallery (302 Market St.).

Patrons of the gallery will be able to hang work on their walls that goes beyond aesthetics. It tells a story that is unfolding, even today. Many of Mr. Haynes’s paintings were made right here in Ste. Genevieve, as the rolling hills, farms, and forests of the Osage are a constant inspiration.

Hot fun in the summertime! It’s finally getting hot around here, but with all the rain we’ve been getting it’s green, green, green outdoors. Not to mention, we’ve got @riverrapidswaterpark just outside of our downtown, so staying cool is still an option.

Fourth of July weekend is going to be a real treat

Fourth of July weekend is going to be a real treat. Not getting away? No big loss. We’ve got Mississippi blues-country artist Jason Eady coming up from Texas for two nights of performances.

The first, on Independence Day, takes place at the opening night of Audubon’s cellar venue, the Midnight Slip. Local singer-songwriter Chris Welch will open the night from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. followed by Mr. Eady himself from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Both artists will treat you to solo acoustic sets as you sip, speakeasy style.

Night two will include some fireworks as Jason Eady joins his full band to take the Orris stage. Just like the first night, Chris Welch will kick the night off at 7 p.m. The shows will go until 10 p.m.

I know, I know. We’ve been harping on the French

I know, I know. We’ve been harping on the French Heritage Festival on this page for a few months leading up to last weekend, when it finally happened. There are plenty of other wonderful festivals and events in this town, including our biggest and most robust, coming up August 9th and 10th: Jour de Fête.

The French Heritage Festival kind of has it all, though. It’s history-forward, but you’re invited to take part in it. It’s old-world crafts that look great in your modern home. It’s timeless traditions that take you out of time and help you frame new head space. This is what Ste. Gen is, in a nutshell.

We send a special thanks to the groups that made this day what it was: @historicstegen, @frenchcolonialamerica, @stegennps, @stegenmuseumlc, and @mostateparks for hosting the event and putting so much manpower behind it.

Thanks to the Ste. Genevieve Milice for setting up a beautiful historic encampment and bringing numbers to our promenade. You made history come alive. Thanks to the French Marines of @lesamisdufortdechartres for fording the river and adding an extra layer to our military presence. Thanks to @_______bradley for his flawless portrayal of the Marquis de Lafayette. Thanks to @ensembles_of_the_past for helping participants really get in character.

Ste. Gen usually turns into Bridgerton only one night a year. That’s the Twelfth Night event we call the King’s Ball in February (an event that’s been a tradition in Ste. Gen since the 1700s). This year, we decided to add a ball to cap the day of festivities at the French Heritage Festival, giving this year’s king and queen of Ste. Genevieve the opportunity to celebrate their crowns once more before their final appearance as guests of honor in the Christmas Parade.

We think it was a major success. So, mark your calendars for the second Saturday of June next year.

Ste. Gen boasts a lot about their history, but part of what makes it an appealing community for residents today is some of the competitive sports facilities we have. You probably didn’t realize that Ste. Gen even had a golf course, but to learn that the course is host to some very competitive tournaments might come as a shock.

The Ste. Genevieve Golf Club was proud to host the Jr. Golf Qualifier Tournament, a professionally conducted PGA event for youth ages 10–18. The winners of this tournament will advance to the Championship Tournament at Trump National Doral in Miami.

We’re honored to welcome events like this and to offer a course that supports competitive golf and community activities here in Ste. Genevieve.

The French Heritage Festival takes place this Saturday, June 14th! Join us at 10:30 a.m. at the steps of the Ste. Genevieve Catholic Church for the opening ceremony, where you’ll hear from the Marquis de Lafayette, witness a musket firing, and march through the streets on a promenade to the festival grounds.

Stay throughout the day for live, Paw Paw French music headlined by Dennis Stroughmatt et L’Esprit Creole, children’s activities hosted at our National Park, a Parisian market at the Je Voudrais Marché tent, a Milice encampment with colonial craft demos, and Creole food (jambalaya, fish fry, and barbecue).

Wait for the day to turn to night on our Frontier French Dance, where you’ll learn to dance like you’re on Bridgerton. You’ll experience the romance of a lantern-lit yard that takes you back in time. We are doing everything we can to save the Modoc F

We are doing everything we can to save the Modoc Ferry. As it stands, it will cease operations at the end of June. After that, the ferry will be split and sold off.

This ultra charming feature, which carries passengers across the river to the French heritage communities of Prairie du Rocher and Fort de Chartres, was first petitioned for in 1798 and began operating soon after.

Back then, the Mississippi River was not a divider but a route of connection between two settlements in a thriving French territory, long before the United States was even imagined.

Dr. Steven Hoffman of Southeast Missouri State has been bringing his preservation class, in partnership with the Felix Vallé State Historic Site for an annual field school for nearly 20 years now. The school puts students in hands on situations with age-old building techniques, like shake splitting or Norman truss notching, even building with bousillage (a form of cob).

Really, though, it’s a dream for those with aspirations of building naturally. Through this lens you can really see the historic houses we hang our reputation on aren’t just relics of the past.
