Wine Country…
The Ste. Geneviève Grape
During the 1800s, Ste. Geneviève had its own type of grape. It went by various names, Ste. Geneviève, Amoureux, Red Elben, and American Rulander. It was grown extensively in the Hermann MO and Ohio areas. Today, it is no longer grown.
Ste. Geneviève people have been making wine for its entire existence. Originally, the early French made wine from wild grapes growing up in the trees. The phrase, making the vintage with a hatchet, referred to the practice of cutting down trees in order to get to the grapes. The wine was also made from local fruits and berries.
Many locals still make their own wine. Today, Ste. Geneviève County is home to numerous wineries along the Route de Vin Trail.
Historic Roads…
The Roads Less Traveled
Ste. Geneviève County is home to three historic roads.
Three Notch Road: The earliest was the Three Notch Road that went from Ste. Geneviève to the lead mines at Mine la Motte.
The King’s Road: The second road was started in 1779 and became known as the King’s Road, or El Camino Real in Spanish, and eventually Kingshighway. There is a rural portion of this road north of downtown Ste. Geneviève that visitors can drive.
The Plank Road: The third historic highway was the 1852 Ste. Geneviève, Iron Mountain, and Plank Road. Constructed of wood, it was the longest such road built in Missouri and was used primarily to haul iron products from Iron Mountain west of present-day Farmington to Ste. Genevieve for transshipment on the river.
Visitors can drive a rural portion of Lime Kiln Road west of Ste. Geneviève.

The Patron Saint of Paris
Did you know the “Ste” in Ste. Geneviève is the abbreviated form of Sainte because the town is named after a French female saint? Ste. Geneviève lived around 400 AD and was well-loved by the French. She is known as the patron saint of Paris since she is attributed to having saved Paris from Attila the Hun.
The Church of Ste. Geneviève has a large statue of her above the front doors, a side altar dedicated to her, and a famous painting “The Vows of Ste. Geneviève” which is purported to have been given to the parish by King Louis XV.
Art Colony…
Post Marked!
A wall in the local post office was the canvas for a special mural commissioned by the federal government. As post offices were being built around the country in the early 1900s, 10% of the budget was directed towards art.
Around the same time, Ste. Geneviève established its own Art Colony similar to the one in Providence, Rhode Island.

Today, Ste. Geneviève has an Art Guild. There are also art galleries, art walks, opportunities to participate in Plein Air, “in the open air” painting, and a variety of art-related activities throughout the year.
Literary Influences… 
The Walls Do Talk In Ste. Geneviève
While not known as the birthplace of any literary figures, Ste. Geneviève has hosted its fair share of authors. The Green Tree Tavern was once the destination for writers passing through town.
Henri Brackenridge, a 7-year-old boy from Pittsburgh was sent to Ste. Geneviève in 1793 for three years to learn French. He describes Ste. Geneviève in his book Recollections of Person and Places in the West and on his return to Ste. Geneviève in 1811, commented, “A sign on the other side of the Gabarie having caught my eye, I resolved to make for it – in former times private hospitality was the only dependence of the traveler.”
Other authors who enjoyed the “private hospitality” of Ste. Geneviève were Thomas Ashe and John Maley.
Ste. Geneviève’s Memorial Cemetery…
The Final Resting Place
Considered the oldest cemetery in Missouri, the Memorial Cemetery is home to around 275 tombstones while the number of people buried there is between 3500 to 5000.
Among those individuals are a US senator and his wife who have been buried 3 TIMES! It’s also the final resting place for Missouri’s first United States representative.
The wide range of peoples interred in the Memorial Cemetery are indicative of the confluence of Ste. Geneviève’s population.
The cemetery was a communal burying ground including early pioneers – Africans both enslaved and free, Native Americans, both American Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers, and a mass burial site for victims of a local steamboat explosion among others.

Oberle Dog
A little butcher shop on the outskirts of Ste. Geneviève is home to the famous Oberle sausage, or as it’s more commonly known the Oberle Dog. The Oberle Dog is courtesy of Ste. Geneviève’s German heritage. Germans from the Southern Black Forest region immigrated here from the 1830s to the 1870s when the Oberle family brought their sausage recipe to the area.
Nuts for Ste. Geneviève – Pecans
If you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, try some pralines made from the pecans of the Carya illinoinensis tree. Known for its naturally sweet taste, this pecan tree is native to Missouri and can be found growing in the deep alluvial soils of the Mississippi River.
The Perfume of Flowers…

Staying true to their past, the sweet smells of perfume still waft in Ste. Geneviève. Enjoy the colonial gardens at the Felix Valle, J. B. Valle, and the Bolduc houses, as well as several mini-gardens located around town. Also, the Master Gardeners of Ste. Geneviève hosts garden walks and tours each year.
An enduring symbol of Ste. Geneviève’s French culture, the fleur de lis, is based on the lily, the official town flower. Fleur de Lis can be seen all over Ste. Geneviève.
John James Audubon…
Following Nature In Her Walks
“During all these years there existed within me a tendency to follow Nature in her walks.”

That “tendency” inspired the naturalist and ornithologist, John James Audubon to follow Nature when he came to Ste. Geneviève in 1812.
After a brief stint as a storekeeper with his business partner Ferdinand Rozier, Audubon soon abandoned that venture for the work that would define his life.
Visitors can learn more about this visionary in the lobby of the hotel named after him.
Hikers can “follow Nature in her walks” in the same scenic areas Audubon did – Hawn State Park, Pickle Springs, Hickory Canyon, and Magnolia Hollow. And closer to town, visit the Ste. Geneviève Levee Wildlife Refuge and Lake Audubon in Ste. Geneviève.

The Jean-Baptiste Vallé House is a large and imposing example of the “poteaux-sure-solle” (post on sill) construction. In the 1850s and 1860s, subsequent owners of the house remodeled it to conform to American tastes. In the 1960s, descendants of Leon Vion, who purchased the property in 1867, restored the house to its pre-1850 appearance.
Jean-Baptiste Vallé was the commandant of this area at the time the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory eliminating that French/Spanish position. Built in 1794, this house served as both a government center and home. Today it is operated by the National Park Service and is open when rangers are available.
Holiday Christmas Festival

The 40th annual Ste. Genevieve Holiday Christmas Festival will be Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th – but it’s much more than just your typical holiday weekend event. It boasts one of the finest Christmas celebrations in all of Missouri, but it’s also lauded as one of the top two Christmas celebrations in the entire Midwest according to AAA magazine. With a setting amidst historic houses, churches, art galleries, museums and a National Park this world-class event includes more than a dozen free performances by famed local and regional musicians, a magician, free crafts for children and adults, historical dancers, historical lectures, an Art Guild show, elegant receptions at various historic sites, a tree-trimming and a live nativity. Also back this year is Le Reveillon, a French Christmas celebrating food, customs and decorations of an early 1800’s Christmas Eve. According to Annette Rolfe, the Executive Director of the event, the weekend will cover more than 700 years of holiday-themed music from Renaissance to 21st Century jazz. Performances include a chamber choir, Madrigal singers, historical French singers, French café singers, a string quartet, a classical guitar, a lute, acoustic guitars, contemporary Latino jazz band, violins, traditional country, alternative country, pop, Celtic harpists, a steel drum band, a classical organist, and a magnificent wind ensemble. And the parade, which begins at 11 AM on Saturday, is one of the largest in the State, with beauty queens, classic cars, marching bands, the Shriners, floats – even Santa himself! “The event gets better every year as we strive to outdo the year before and this year’s lineup is the best yet,” said Rolfe. “Everyone who attends will be delighted!” And, like prior years, there will also be FREE photos with Santa and FREE hotdogs for children 12 and under. Don’t miss the biggest holiday event of the season, in the charming town of Ste. Genevieve.
Déjà vu Spirit Reunion

“Meet” Dr. Lewis Linn, Missouri’s model Senator, Ferdinand Rozier an early merchant, and Jean Baptiste Valle an early leader of the community. Or “meet” folks portraying the well-to-do, or the not-so-well-to-do, residents of Ste. Geneviève’s history before 1880?
At the Déjà vu Spirit Reunion, on the 4th Saturday in October from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., visitors will experience these stories and more as the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Geneviève hosts its annual event in the historic Memorial Cemetery. Tour the cemetery via lantern light and chat “face-to-face” with friendly spirits clad in traditional dress and enjoy a hauntingly good time.

Rural Heritage Day
Rural Heritage Day, the fourth Saturday in October, is a celebration of history, reverie, and reminiscence dedicated to the hard-working founders of Ste. Geneviève. Come see how it used to be done: whether it’s farming, cooking, spinning, lace-making, leatherworking, soap-making, wood carving, gardening, apple pressing or good old-fashioned games.
Jour de Fête
August 12-13, 2023
The annual Jour de Fête, the second full weekend in August, is southeast Missouri’s largest outdoor crafts fair with 150 vendors, food choices, and music. Held in the heart of Ste. Geneviève’s Historic District, visitors can browse through arts and crafts booths. Shop till you drop and enjoy live music, food, living history demonstrations, and other activities at this family-friendly event.
Freedom Celebration

Celebrate Ste. Geneviève’s Independence Day public gathering with music, speeches, and fireworks! At noon there is a traditional celebration with a church bell ringing, Pledge of Allegiance, patriotic speeches, and music, as well as an honor salute by various local organizations.
That evening the local Muny Band will perform patriotic music, and at dusk, Fireworks will explode in Ste. Geneviève’s Pere Marquette Park.
French Heritage Festival
June 8-9, 2024
The French Heritage Festival, 2nd Weekend in June, celebrates 300 years of French culture and traditions! Experience living history, live traditional music, and La Veillee folk dancing at the Felix Valle State Historic Site.

Master Gardener’s Annual Garden Walk
May 20-21, 2023
The Ste. Geneviève Master Gardeners’ annual Garden Walk is held in the downtown historic district the weekend following Mother’s Day. It is a unique opportunity to tour private and public gardens.
Several gardens are part of historic homes in Ste. Geneviève and are typical of the 18th-century time period. Other activities include a Master Gardeners’ plant sale, private vendors, discounts at participating downtown merchants, art exhibits, and on Saturday, the Farmers Market.
La Guiannée (La Guignolèe)

Founded by French merchants and fur traders, Ste. Geneviève remained a French-speaking enclave for many years in the newly Americanized Midwest. Sadly, the last generations of native French speakers are disappearing, but cherished traditions like La Guiannée still remain. This ancient tradition, analogous to the English custom of Wassailing that dates back to Europe’s Middle Ages, is celebrated by descendants of those French settlers.
You can watch and participate with these singers and musicians as they celebrate this 250-year-old tradition each New Year’s Eve in the streets, cafes, and pubs of Ste. Geneviève’s Historic District.
“Bonsoir le maître et la maîtresse, and everyone who lives here too. Now for the last day of the year, la guignolée vous nous devez.” So begins the song chanted almost every New Year’s Eve in Ste. Genevieve for well over 250 years! Ste. Genevieve’s La Guignolèe singing troupe will again run their circuit of the Ste. Genevieve historic district in their centuries old New Year’s tradition. Dressed in bizarre and somewhat archaic costumes, the revelers wander from place to place on New Year’s Eve, singing a beggars’ song for favors.
Make a dinner reservation at a restaurant to see the troupe as they make their rounds, watch them perform in the Valle gym at 7:00pm, or attend a La Guignolèe watch party sponsored by the Centre for French Colonial Life 6:30pm-8:30pm. Don’t miss this unusual display of French tradition!

On Saturday afternoon, the Felix Vallé House State Historic Site, which dates to 1818, re-creates Le Réveillon—a traditional feast usually served after midnight Christmas Mass that includes 13 desserts honoring Jesus and his disciples.
Then return to Ste. Geneviève on December 31 for La Guignolée, a French New Year’s Eve tradition. Follow costumed La Guignolèe revelers as they march to select sites in town and sing a beggar’s song for drinks and favors. The party continues at their final stop, the Centre for French Colonial Life, and participants welcome the New Year.

“Saving St. Louis” Exhibit Opens At Centre For French Colonial Life
French Colonial America (FCA) unveils “Saving St. Louis,” an exhibit explaining the role of the 60 militiamen who traveled upstream and were instrumental in thwarting the British attack on May 26, 1780. The exhibit opened at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at the Centre for French Colonial Life.
Militia and living history specialists will be on-site for the opening and every Saturday throughout the summer.
The “Saving St. Louis” exhibit features original and reproduction weapons and equipment used in this region by both French and Native American peoples during the late 18th century.
To help visualize the story, professional photographer Ronald Rayfield recreated scenes and militia reenact the 60 Ste. Geneviève fighters at the battle.
FCA Executive Director Geoff Giglierano said, “it may come as a revelation to many visitors, even those who are familiar with the American Revolution, that the story of the Battle of St. Louis and the role played in it by citizen-soldiers from Ste. Geneviève is not as commonly known as it deserves to be.”
The Centre for French Colonial Life is the museum building and entry point for FCA’s historic campus. The campus also offers hourly guided tours of the historic Louis Bolduc House (circa 1788) and Bolduc-LeMeilleur House (circa 1820) and grounds as well as the “Hands-on History” program at the Beauvais-Linden House (circa 1820).
The campus is owned by French Colonial America, a recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit.
May 8 activities also include “Tunes, Tomahawks & Tours,” with live music, tomahawk-throwing, and activities at the Linden House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $3 cash only.
The Centre for French Colonial Life will be open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until further notice.
Admission for the exhibit is $5 per adult, $3 for children, and free to military members with an ID. The Centre for French Colonial Life is located at 198 Market Street in Ste. Geneviève, Missouri. Ample free parking is available behind the facility.

Junior Ranger Makes Ste. Geneviève Her 345th National Park Stop
Aida Frey from the Chicago area visited Ste. Geneviève on December 29, 2020, making her 345th stop at a national park.
Frey is a participant in and a proponent of the NPS Junior Ranger program. Her business card calls her the “Sweetheart of the National Parks.” She posts about her travels on Facebook (Junior Ranger Aida Frey), Twitter (@jrranger) and Instagram (@juniorrangeraida). She also has a written a book, “America, Can I Have Your Autograph?”
Frey and her family stopped through Ste. Geneviève during a trip that also included three national trip stops in Texas — Big Bend National Park, Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River, and Fort Davis National Historic Site.
The Ste. Geneviève National Historical Park was established as the 422nd unit of the National Park Service on October 30, 2020. There now are 423 national park units.

With Visit To Ste. Genevieve, Kovalski Adds Another National Park To His List
Four years ago this month, Dr. Paul Kovalski completed a 30-year journey to visit all the national parks. The dentist from Marlboro, New Jersey saved for last a park in his home state — Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park. It was his 413th different national park.
Dr. Paul Kovalski posed with Mickey Koetting on the porch of the Guibourd-Valle House before Koetting led a tour of the 1806 home, one of the historic structures open for touring in Ste. Genevieve.
The National Park Service keeps adding parks, however, and Kovalski keeps traveling.
On Thursday, December 17, he visited Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park, the second-newest unit in the National Park Service system — No. 422. (The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument was established as the 423rd unit on December 10.)
Kovalski, who also volunteers many hours per year at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, brought to Ste.Genevieve some items from that park as well as other national parks he has visited. While he rates Glacier National Park as tops on his list, he thought the story of St. Croix Island, founded in 1604 as one of the first settlements of New France, would be of interest to Ste. Genevieve history buffs.
While in Ste. Genevieve, Kovalski toured the Guibourd-Valle House operated by the Foundation for Restoration. He also visited the Ste. Genevieve Welcome Center; the National Park Service headquarters at the Jean-Baptiste Valle House; and the Green Tree Tavern, which is owned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources but has been legislatively approved for transfer to the National Park Service.
Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park was established on October 30, 2020. It includes the Jean-Baptiste Valle House on South Main Street and the Bauvais-Amoureux House on St. Mary’s Road. The National Park Service is working with the city of Ste. Genevieve to jointly operate the Welcome Center, which also has been approved for transfer to the National Park Service.
Since establishment, the park has attracted visitors interested in having their National Park Service passport books stamped. Also among the visitors so far is David Kroese, an author who chronicled his visits to all the national parks in his book, The Centennial: A Journey through America’s National Parks System.

Monday, December 14, 2021 marks 1,211 days since the Great American Eclipse of 2017, and 1,211 days to the next total solar eclipse for Ste. Geneviève — on April 8, 2024.
A solar eclipse did take place on Monday, December 14, 2021 and it was viewable in Argentina and Chile in South America.

Ste. Geneviève was included in the path of totality on August 21, 2017 — the first time that was the case since perhaps the 1400s.
The St. Louis area had not previously been on the centerline for a total solar eclipse since 1442, and St. Louis won’t be on the centerline for the 2024 eclipse.
The 2024 centerline will cross the United States from Texas to the northeast. The north edge of the centerline will not extend as far up as Festus but it will include Ste. Geneviève County.
As the northern end of the centerline, Ste. Geneviève will have about 2 minutes of totality; Cape Girardeau will have about 4 minutes as the midpoint of the centerline.
Ste. Geneviève had more than 2 1/2 minutes of totality in 2017 by being at the midpoint of the centerline and near the point of longest duration in Southern Illinois.
In 2017, Ste. Geneviève hosted a one-day musical festival leading into the eclipse event, and a viewing event took place at the Ste. Geneviève County Community Center.

The Encampment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center for French Colonial Life.
The living history camp will include children’s games, colonial skills demonstrations and colonial crafts and trades such as gun building, chair seat weaving, spinning, leatherwork, and more.
The event is free and is children- and family-friendly.

Octane Tour Impressed With Drive Through Ste. Genevieve
The Daily Journal published a story about the Octane Tour’s visit to Southeast Missouri during the weekend of September 11 to September 13, 2020.
The tour attracts dozens of car enthusiasts in the St. Louis area for weekend getaway drives. This year’s drive featured Ste. Geneviève County and its wine country.

Ste. Genevieve’s Pere Marquette Park hosted a Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned tournament on Sunday (August 23).
The Pere Marquette Open, which teed off at 9 a.m., was the first tournament of its kind in Ste. Genevieve. Competitors played 36 holes. Categories included open, advanced, intermediate, recreational and junior. Professionals in the open division competed for prize money.

Music Art Love is an eclectic gallery of art, decor, and music. They host a variety of events from live music to art classes, featured artist receptions, open mics, exercise classes, acting workshops, inspirational talks, and more and with their new location that have a separate music space for performances.
Guests may bring their own coffee or glass of wine from local establishments and play musical instruments, play games, read in-store books, and of course, buy that unique one-of-a-kind item!

The Linden House (built in stages from 1811/1812 to the 1930s) features fun and educational colonial-era activities for audiences of all ages: visit and experience colonial crafts and games and learn about the area’s unique French Creole history and culture in the recreated store, the merchant’s living quarters and the “common room.” Admission is free, courtesy of Elizabeth Roth.

The Bolduc House was the home of Louis Bolduc, a French Creole merchant, built in the late 18th century in the unique French Creole vertical timber style of architecture. It was restored in the 1950s to its 1790s appearance, and is a National Historic Landmark. The house is fully furnished with original late 18th-early 19th century artifacts. Guided tours also take guests into the LeMeilleur House next door, which was a home built around 1820 by one of Louis’ granddaughters. This also is furnished with original artifacts and illustrates how many aspects of life in this region changed within a relatively short time span, while other elements of Creole life did continue.
Tours happen every hour on the half hour (except 12:30) and tickets for the house tours may be purchased at the campus gift shop inside the Centre for French Colonial Life at the corner of 2nd and Market Streets.

The Silo Farm Haus boasts nearly 800 square feet of a truly unique, roundhouse experience! An upstairs, spacious loft features a queen-size bed that sleeps 2. Downstairs features a full-size eat-in kitchen. You will find all the items you need if you wish to prepare a meal.
Just off the kitchen is a cozy living room with plenty of comfortable seating including a loveseat that folds out to a futon, a rocker recliner chair, an accent chair, and a custom-made bench for two! An air mattress can accommodate 2 additional guests to sleep in the living room downstairs.
There is one bathroom located downstairs with a full-size shower, plenty of towels, a hairdryer, and luxury toiletries for you to enjoy during your stay. A laundry room with a large washer and dryer and iron are included making this Silo a complete home away from your home!
