The Bauvais-Amoureux House was built in 1792 by Je The Bauvais-Amoureux House was built in 1792 by Jean Baptiste Bauvais, one of Ste. Genevieve’s early settlers. After the flood of 1785, the Bauvais family moved to higher ground near the fertile farmland of Le Grand Champ and rebuilt. In 1852, the home was purchased by Benjamin Amoureux and his wife Pélagie, who had been born into slavery and later gained her freedom. Their family lived in the house until 1923. The building is a rare surviving example of poteaux-en-terre (post-in-ground) construction, with original walnut beams still supporting the roof. Only a handful of these structures remain in the United States.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2025 G Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2025 Garden Walk & Plant Sale, hosted by the Ste. Genevieve Master Gardeners and the University of Missouri Extension.

Guests enjoyed access to private and historic gardens, many open to the public only once a year, along with a plant sale featuring locally grown annuals, perennials, vegetables, and more. Proceeds support ongoing beautification projects across our downtown.

This year’s event also featured Art in the Garden at the Jean Baptiste Valle House, where visitors of all ages were invited to paint en plein air in the historic gardens just across from Garden Walk Headquarters.

It was a beautiful weekend in Ste. Genevieve, and we’re grateful to all who helped make it a success.

John Karel is one of our most treasured transplant John Karel is one of our most treasured transplants to Ste. Genevieve. Once the president of Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, John brings an immense love of history to our city and has such a captivating way of conveying that history. John is also one of our great preservationists of this century, having renovated two historic estates, including a vertical timber French construction dubbed the LaLamondier House which happens to be the finest example of a colloquial poteaux-sir-solle structure built by a common family in Ste. Gen, as opposed to a family of great means.

Sunset on the levee. It’s been a wet spring, but Sunset on the levee. It’s been a wet spring, but it’s given the sky so much texture, and the fields are glowing green.
Look at the view! And watch the town sparkle like Look at the view! And watch the town sparkle like rhinestones. Ste. Genevieve’s beauty and feel have been likened to villages in Europe. That encapsulates the romance you feel driving in, but, nothing quite can describe the feeling you get walking the streets at night. It’s peaceful. It’s safe. It stretches your perspective on what America is all about.

Here, it’s about preserving the things worth living for. We’ve kept our downtown alive. We’ve kept our Catholic faith strong. We’ve made the streets more walkable. We’ve continued to find ways to conserve the historic houses that make our story so interesting.

The French Heritage Festival, hosted by @historics The French Heritage Festival, hosted by @historicstegen is almost a month away and this year we are putting more thought and planning into making it the best it’s been in years. We’ve got more buy-in from our historic site and educational partners than we’ve had, and we’re making plans for growing this festival in the future.

While this has been traditionally more of an insular locals celebration, we see the potential for it to become a way to bring in a larger community of people trying to preserve French heritage across the United States. This year, we’ve invited those folks and we’re hoping they get a chance to mingle with locals who are passionate about the traditions we keep.

@braienshokinss will be here showing his film based on Paw Paw French folktales that would have been told in Ste. Gen. If you haven’t seen Hawkins work in the past, you’re in for a treat.

Ste. Genevieve Catholic Church is one of the most Ste. Genevieve Catholic Church is one of the most enduring landmarks in Missouri’s oldest town, Ste. Genevieve. The parish was founded in 1759 by Jesuit missionaries from Quebec and named for Ste. Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris. The current Gothic Revival church was designed by Fr. Francis Xavier Weiss and built over earlier log and stone churches. Its cornerstone was laid in 1876, and it was consecrated in 1880. For generations, the church has stood through flood, war, and change, occupying the same ground since the 18th century.

According to local tradition, when the current brick church was constructed in the 1870s, it was built around the original wooden church. Once the new structure was complete, the old church was carefully dismantled and its pieces carried out through the front doors. The baptismal bowl used today is believed to be the same one from the mid-1700s, used to baptize generations of parishioners over the centuries.

Sara hand-makes most of the clothing herself. She’s a hard worker and treats this hobby-turned-passion-business with the utmost attention to detail. She’ll be set up from 11am - 8pm at the LeMeilleur House with her rentals the Friday before the festival.

We’re really looking forward to making her a yearly staple at the French Heritage Festival.

Meriwether Lewis
- During the Lewis and Clark Expedition on May 23, 1804, Meriwether Lewis was climbing the pinnacles of Tavern Rock, a cliff near St. Charles, Missouri, when he slipped. He was able to grab onto the cliff with his knife and stop his fall, preventing a potentially dangerous descent. The incident occurred near a cave called Tavern Cave, where Clark added his name to the graffiti left by earlier travelers. Hear more tales of this explorer, soldier, politician!

One of our downtown’s landmark businesses, Sara’s Ice Cream, reopened under new ownership on April 1. The Monia family bought the business, invested in renovations, and restored the vintage decor that made Sara’s one of the cutest retro experiences in Ste. Gen.

It’s such a testament to what makes Ste. Gen so special, that new investors recognize what’s wonderful about what we have and only hope to improve upon it. That’s just what the Monias hope to do by keeping Sara’s open year-round, diversifying its offerings by adding smoothies and coffee, and expanding its hours of operation.

We wish the Monias all the luck in the world and we’re happy they’re now a part of our downtown ranks!

We celebrate our French traditions and customs through language, music, food, dance and dressing in the French colonial style.

This year, we’re adding a ticketed Bridgerton-esque dance called the Frontier French Dance, where everyone is invited to dress in colonial garb and learn English country dance and slow waltzing. More information and tickets are available at https://www.historicstegen.org

For those of you who’d love to dress up, @ensembles_of_the_past is offering rentals for the event. You can rent directly from her site, and she will set up the Friday before the festival for try-ons and rental pick-up. https://www.ensemblesofthepast.com/french-heritage-festival

The StG Gravel Classic brought cyclists from acros The StG Gravel Classic brought cyclists from across the region to ride Ste. Genevieve’s levees and gravel backroads. Riders chose between 20, 45, or 78 mile routes with less than 10% on paved roads. The event marks another part of what makes Ste. Gen so special in its ability to trend toward becoming a great hub for outdoor activity. Not only are there 77 miles of rideable gravel to the south, but there’s equal amounts of smooth blacktop headed north. Trails that lead to beautiful, unobstructed views of the Mississippi River. Events like these expose a different demographic than we’re used to, but it’s one that we believe shares the same values that have made us special, historically speaking.
