The Orris | Learning Center Presents The Mysterious Life and Death of
Meriwether Lewis
- During the Lewis and Clark Expedition on May 23, 1804, Meriwether Lewis was climbing the pinnacles of Tavern Rock, a cliff near St. Charles, Missouri, when he slipped. He was able to grab onto the cliff with his knife and stop his fall, preventing a potentially dangerous descent. The incident occurred near a cave called Tavern Cave, where Clark added his name to the graffiti left by earlier travelers. Hear more tales of this explorer, soldier, politician!

One of our downtown’s landmark businesses, Sara’s Ice Cream, reopened under new ownership on April 1. The Monia family bought the business, invested in renovations, and restored the vintage decor that made Sara’s one of the cutest retro experiences in Ste. Gen.

It’s such a testament to what makes Ste. Gen so special, that new investors recognize what’s wonderful about what we have and only hope to improve upon it. That’s just what the Monias hope to do by keeping Sara’s open year-round, diversifying its offerings by adding smoothies and coffee, and expanding its hours of operation.

We wish the Monias all the luck in the world and we’re happy they’re now a part of our downtown ranks!

Last Friday at the 4th Friday Art Walk, Music Art Love hosted live music by Jerrek Stone and featured artwork by local artists Hannah Walker and Heidi Walker. It was one of many stops showcasing the arts during the monthly event, which runs through October. Each month, a new set of artists takes over Music Art Love and other venues around town. Be sure to take advantage of this lovely event when you’re in town.

Come to the French Heritage Festival, June 14th in

Come to the French Heritage Festival, June 14th in Ste. Genevieve, MO and see a small town that’s big on preserving its French culture. We celebrate our French traditions and customs through language, music, food, dance and dressing in the French colonial style.

This year, we’re adding a ticketed Bridgerton-esque dance called the Frontier French Dance, where everyone is invited to dress in colonial garb and learn English country dance and slow waltzing. More information and tickets are available at https://www.historicstegen.org

The StG Gravel Classic brought cyclists from acros

The StG Gravel Classic brought cyclists from across the region to ride Ste. Genevieve’s levees and gravel backroads. Riders chose between 20, 45, or 78 mile routes with less than 10% on paved roads. The event marks another part of what makes Ste. Gen so special in its ability to trend toward becoming a great hub for outdoor activity. Not only are there 77 miles of rideable gravel to the south, but there’s equal amounts of smooth blacktop headed north. Trails that lead to beautiful, unobstructed views of the Mississippi River. Events like these expose a different demographic than we’re used to, but it’s one that we believe shares the same values that have made us special, historically speaking.

It looks like the Ste. Genevieve Spring Trade Fair

It looks like the Ste. Genevieve Spring Trade Faire will, in fact, transition into the Ste. Genevieve Fall Trade Faire as plans have been set for September 13th. Word is the trade faire will activate the entire French Colonial America campus creating a walking tour that will encompass history between 1780-1820. Another whole camp will showcase Native American Voyageurs. It should be quite the spectacle and will move Ste. Gen closer to becoming an amazing place to not only view history, but be immersed in it.

This past weekend, the Louis Bolduc yard in Ste. G

This past weekend, the Louis Bolduc yard in Ste. Genevieve hosted the Les Amis du Fort de Chartres Market Faire in partnership with the Ste. Genevieve Militia’s Spring Milice encampment. The yard came alive with 18th-century reenactors, traditional artisans, and period demonstrations, offering a unique look at our region’s colonial past. Plans are in the works to make the Market Faire an annual event beginning this September, with more details to come.

The Orris | Remembering the Flood of ‘93
- In 1993, Ste. Genevieve, MO experienced a record-breaking flood. From July 1,1993 until August 6, 1993 the Mississippi River crest rose until it reached a maximum height of 49.74 feet. During that summer Ste. Genevieve experienced a natural disaster that cost the community millions of dollars in damages but, through the coordinated efforts of local, state and federal agencies and the assistance of tens of thousands of volunteers every life was preserved. Relive that awe-inspiring summer with the people who were front and center in keeping the flood waters at bay and documenting the river’s historic rise. This presentation is free to museum members, otherwise, regular admission applies.

We want to take the time to congratulate the Friends of Ste. Genevieve Fire District on their big win in the polls on Tuesday! We try our best to promote Ste. Genevieve to a broader audience and maybe our best asset for doing so is the strength of this community. Just look at the “Touch-A-Truck” event they were able to put on in support of something that keeps this community one of the safest, most supportive, and family-oriented communities in all of the United States 🇺🇸. We’re all very proud to call this place home and we’re looking forward to not only keeping the great services we have, but expanding them so future generations can make this an even better place to live!

We are so lucky to have Justine and Ronnie Rayfiel

We are so lucky to have Justine and Ronnie Rayfield (our two local celebrities) as part of our rich community. Not only do they stay busy broadcasting living history to a massive audience around the world on their Early American YouTube channel, but they’re always available for demonstrations around town. And, boy, do they bring the heat…enough to bake a loaf of bread.

Here, @justineybeanie brings baking bread in the late 1700s to life with this recipe she frequently uses in a cookbook from Kaskaskia (a small island in the Mississippi River just a few miles south of Ste. Gen) that dates to the 1790s. Steph from @explorestlparks - and her four daughters-got to taste the spoils of the day.

What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?

One of the most under-marketed-but-wonderful exper

One of the most under-marketed-but-wonderful experiences you can have in Ste. Gen is jumping in the Modoc Ferry and visiting @lesamisdufortdechartres . For one, the ferry landing is your chance to see the Mississippi River from Ste. Genevieve and being able to get out in the river is a major plus.

The drive to Fort de Chartres is a beauty and covers long stretches of levee and farm roads where you get to take in the scenery and ponder what it must have been like to travel this network of French colonies in the late 1700s. The Fort itself is an impressive remnant of that time and the Les Amis do a bang-up job of keeping the first stocked with reenactors and fun events that help you visualize what it was like when it was operational.

We went across for a seed exchange where you could get seeds from heirloom fruits, veggies, and flowers that have been grown in gardens in the area for more than 200 years. This week was supposed to be their market fair, where period vendors and demonstrators set up to shows their skill and their wares. Unfortunately, due to rain, it’s been cancelled. But, a scaled down version will now take April 12th behind the Linden House @frenchcolonialamerica during the milice encampment. More details on that to come!
