Ste. Gen boasts a lot about their history, but par Ste. Gen boasts a lot about their history, but part of what makes it an appealing community for residents today is some of the competitive sports facilities we have. You probably didn’t realize that Ste. Gen even had a golf course, but to learn that the course is host to some very competitive tournaments might come as a shock.

The Ste. Genevieve Golf Club was proud to host the Jr. Golf Qualifier Tournament, a professionally conducted PGA event for youth ages 10–18. The winners of this tournament will advance to the Championship Tournament at Trump National Doral in Miami.

We’re honored to welcome events like this and to offer a course that supports competitive golf and community activities here in Ste. Genevieve.

We are doing everything we can to save the Modoc F We are doing everything we can to save the Modoc Ferry. As it stands, it will cease operations at the end of June. After that, the ferry will be split and sold off.

This ultra charming feature, which carries passengers across the river to the French heritage communities of Prairie du Rocher and Fort de Chartres, was first petitioned for in 1798 and began operating soon after.

Back then, the Mississippi River was not a divider but a route of connection between two settlements in a thriving French territory, long before the United States was even imagined.

If you would be sad to see the ferry go, please make your voice heard in the comments.

Dr. Steven Hoffman of Southeast Missouri State has Dr. Steven Hoffman of Southeast Missouri State has been bringing his preservation class, in partnership with the Felix Vallé State Historic Site for an annual field school for nearly 20 years now. The school puts students in hands on situations with age-old building techniques, like shake splitting or Norman truss notching, even building with bousillage (a form of cob).

Really, though, it’s a dream for those with aspirations of building naturally. Through this lens you can really see the historic houses we hang our reputation on aren’t just relics of the past. They have real-world lessons for the homesteaders and diy people of today. Thanks to @semissouristate for keeping this tradition going!

After nearly two years closed for restoration, the After nearly two years closed for restoration, the Bauvais-Amoureux House is once again open to the public. Even longer in the making is the film shown in celebration of its restoration: Pélagie X. This short film by Academy Award-winning director Ben Proudfoot documents the life of the home’s most notable owner, Pélagie Amoureux, who spent the early part of her life enslaved.

She married the French-descended Benjamin Amoureux around 1830 and spent the first few years of their marriage still enslaved to the Bauvais family, gaining her manumission in 1832. Although they had five children together, she lived apart from her husband until 1852, when they purchased the Bauvais-Amoureux home. Her story is a uniquely American one, and we’re proud to have documentation of it. It’s just one of many stories we’ve preserved here in Ste. Gen.

The film is paired with a project led by one of Pélagie’s descendants, Don Strand, who is building a series of online resources to help people discover the stories of their African-American ancestors and the documents that provide context. It has truly been a labor of love and became the perfect way to celebrate not just the architecture that remains, but the story of America becoming—the story of the people who carved out a life in this unique piece of wilderness.
The Bauvais-Amoureux House was built in 1792 by Je The Bauvais-Amoureux House was built in 1792 by Jean Baptiste Bauvais, one of Ste. Genevieve’s early settlers. After the flood of 1785, the Bauvais family moved to higher ground near the fertile farmland of Le Grand Champ and rebuilt. In 1852, the home was purchased by Benjamin Amoureux and his wife Pélagie, who had been born into slavery and later gained her freedom. Their family lived in the house until 1923. The building is a rare surviving example of poteaux-en-terre (post-in-ground) construction, with original walnut beams still supporting the roof. Only a handful of these structures remain in the United States.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2025 G Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2025 Garden Walk & Plant Sale, hosted by the Ste. Genevieve Master Gardeners and the University of Missouri Extension.

Guests enjoyed access to private and historic gardens, many open to the public only once a year, along with a plant sale featuring locally grown annuals, perennials, vegetables, and more. Proceeds support ongoing beautification projects across our downtown.

Look at the view! And watch the town sparkle like Look at the view! And watch the town sparkle like rhinestones. Ste. Genevieve’s beauty and feel have been likened to villages in Europe. That encapsulates the romance you feel driving in, but, nothing quite can describe the feeling you get walking the streets at night. It’s peaceful. It’s safe. It stretches your perspective on what America is all about.

Here, it’s about preserving the things worth living for. We’ve kept our downtown alive. We’ve kept our Catholic faith strong. We’ve made the streets more walkable. We’ve continued to find ways to conserve the historic houses that make our story so interesting.
