American Custard Co. In a town famous for French colonial history, American Custard Co. represents something equally important—what happens when a family-owned establishment decides that consistency and quality matter more than convenience. Located near the water park, this local flagship for American fare delivers proof that chain restaurants didn’t create modern fast food because it’s inevitable but rather because it’s profitable. Every detail receives attention that corporate standardization abandoned decades ago. The burgers—whether standard classics or featuring culinary twists—are cooked properly with actual technique. Hot chicken sandwiches can be grilled for those seeking healthier options without sacrificing flavor. The fries swim in beef tallow like they’re supposed to be, not vegetable oil. Salads feature fresh lettuce and homemade vinaigrette rather than mass-produced dressing. The coffee rivals St. Louis Starbucks, eliminating the need to miss city amenities while visiting. And the frozen custard that gives the establishment its name? It fills the role Ted Drewe’s plays in the city—genuine frozen custard excellence capturing what dessert should be. This is Ste. Genevieve’s testament to community commitment: a family working their tale off serving fresh-cooked food reflecting care that can’t be systematized or franchised. Audubon’s Restaurant The Unequivocal Center of Downtown Ste. Geneviève Nestled in the heart of downtown Ste. Genevieve at 9 North Main Street, Audubon’s occupies a century-old building that has anchored the town’s social scene since 1901. Originally the historically famous Palace Bar starting in 1903, the restaurant reopened under current ownership in 2015 with a mission to reflect the cultural identity and history of Ste. Genevieve through scratch-made cuisine. The menu celebrates the town’s diverse heritage—French, Cajun, German, and Italian dishes crafted with locally sourced ingredients. One satisfied guest summed it up: “We ended our wine tasting day with dinner at the Audubon. We had the Schnitzel, Cajun Shrimp and mushroom burger. All were wonderful! Staff is great! Facility is clean.” Where the Past Meets the Present Audubon’s philosophy centers on giving visitors a chance to taste the history and diversity of Ste. Genevieve’s community while offering locals an opportunity to taste a bit of their own heritage. The scratch-made menu balances upscale dining with comfort food familiarity—German schnitzel and spaetzle sit alongside Cajun pasta, French onion soup, Italian fettuccine, and American classics like burgers and brick oven pizza. Signature dishes draw consistent praise. The pork schnitzel comes “bigger than Read more…

Birdies Coffee + Bakery On a quiet downtown corner in Ste. Genevieve, Birdies Coffee + Bakery represents what happens when someone with deep local roots decides to do coffee and baked goods right. Nicole, a lifelong Ste. Genevieve resident, opened Birdies with a straightforward mission: serve great coffee. That mission, stated simply, belies the care underlying every cup, pastry, and seasonal specialty. She also serves serious matcha for those seeking alternatives to coffee, but the homemade oatmeal cream pie—flawlessly executed, triggering genuine nostalgia—signals that Birdies understands baked goods deserve respect matching the coffee. The breakfast fried rice delivers unexpected sophistication to traditional morning offerings, while protein-packed egg bites provide substantial grab-and-go options. The menu of specialty coffee changes seasonally, bringing seasonal creativity without ever losing sight of what matters: quality coffee and matcha consistently taking center stage. Whether you’re starting your day before exploring historic sites, grabbing midday caffeine and pastry, or settling in with specialty drink and conversation, Birdies delivers what independent coffee shops do best—genuine quality reflecting owner’s personal commitment. Local Ownership: Mission Driven, Not Corporate Nicole’s status as lifelong Ste. Genevieve resident matters more than casual mention suggests. She’s not outside investor extracting profit but rather community Read more…

Brix Urban Winery & Market with Star Lite River Restaurant In the heart of Ste. Genevieve’s historic district, beneath a grape arbor that whispers of vineyards older than memory, Brix Urban Winery invites you into an un-traditional embrace with mead—that ancient honey wine experiencing its own romantic resurrection. Within these historic walls, Star Lite River Restaurant awakens at dawn with pastries and coffee, its kitchen breathing life into mornings with the kind of food that transforms breakfast into ritual. By afternoon, Brix unfolds: small-batch meads, craft beers, wine slushies frozen into summertime indulgence, and flights that guide you through flavor like constellations mapped across your palate. This is where the Schaaf family—stewards of beloved establishments across the region—honors the marriage between handcrafted beverages and the intimate charm of small-town gathering. Whether wandering downtown’s galleries between tastings, or settling beneath the grape arbor as evening descends, you discover what Ste. Genevieve offers best: moments lingering with good company, unhurried time, and the particular magic that emerges when ancient tradition meets contemporary craft. The Spirit of Mead: Ancient Honey Wine Reimagined Mead dwells in mythology. Beowulf drank from mead halls. Medieval monks crafted it within monastery walls. It carries the weight of Read more…

Coffee, Pastries, Breakfast, Lunch About Common Grounds: Common Grounds is another unique community story that will give you the fuzzies thinking about Sainte Geneviève. It’s a coffee house that employs special needs individuals, giving them the feeling of independence while giving the customers smiles. And it’s due in large part to one man: Major Jason Schott of the Ste. Genevieve Sherriff’s Department. Major Schott is a big part of Ste. Genevieve’s movement towards inclusion for folks with special needs, spearheading efforts to set our community apart by building an all-inclusive playground at Progress Sports Complex, Challenger Field, an all-inclusive soft-ball field at the same site, expanding the scope of Ste. Genevieve’s Independence Center made to help adults with special needs become more independent, and last but not least, starting Common Grounds in downtown Sainte Geneviève. The result of the effort to create Common Grounds has given this town a consistent place to get good coffee, breakfast, and lunch throughout the week. They serve various coffees and hot beverages as well as pastries, quiches, wraps, salads, and light sandwiches. Read more…
