American Custard Co. – Where Quality, Consistency, and Frozen Custard Excellence Define Sainte Geneviève’s Flagship American Fare In a town famous for French colonial history, you might not expect to find what many locals consider Sainte Geneviève’s best example of classic American food done right. But at American Custard Co., a family-owned establishment that’s become the community’s flagship for quality American fare, every detail receives attention that chain restaurants abandoned decades ago. The burgers—whether standard or featuring culinary twists—are cooked properly. The hot chicken sandwiches can be grilled for healthier options. The fries are fried in beef tallow like they’re supposed to be. The salads feature fresh lettuce and homemade vinaigrette. The coffee rivals city Starbucks. And the frozen custard that gives the establishment its name? It’s the concrete you wished you’d gotten at Ted Drewes in St. Louis but didn’t have time for. This is consistency and quality without shortcuts, corners cut, or compromises. This is a local family working their tails off to serve their community food that’s fresh-cooked, properly prepared, and worthy of loyal customers who return again and again because they know what they’re getting: excellence in American classics from breakfast through dinner, crowned by frozen Read more…

Coffee, Pastries, Breakfast Bites About Birdies: Nicole is a local Sainte Genevièvan whose mission is to serve a great cup of coffee. Incidentally, she also serves a great matcha as well as some serious baked goods. Of these, the homemade oatmeal cream pie is a staple that is hard to pass up with its flawless execution. It’ll send a shiver of nostalgia through your tongue. Before it was Birdies, this location has long been a coffee shop that hung its hat on quick and satisfying breakfast nibbles. Nicole has made her own spin on the menu, offering a breakfast fried rice that is a real nice wake-me-up and egg bites that pack just the right amount of protein. The menu of specialty coffee changes with the seasons and is always bringing the creativity. The best thing is you can always count of the quality of the coffee (or matcha) taking center stage. McDonald’s Sainte Geneviève – Fast Food Slows Down and Adapts to Small-Town Sensibilities Every American knows McDonald’s—the golden arches, the Big Mac, the French fries, the relentless standardization that means a Quarter Pounder in Miami tastes identical to one in Seattle. Corporate consistency is the entire point: you know exactly what you’re getting regardless of location. Except when you don’t. Except when a McDonald’s location in a small historic town operates just differently enough that it stops being generic fast food and becomes something more interesting—a franchise that adapted to local expectations rather than imposing corporate uniformity. Sainte Geneviève’s McDonald’s, tucked into Missouri’s oldest town, is that exception. It serves the same menu corporate requires, features the same branding, and technically operates as the McDonald’s you know. But walk inside and you’ll notice differences: the atmosphere is relaxed rather than rushed, the interior resembles a lounge more than typical fast-food dining room, your food arrives at your table rather than being thrust across a counter, and you’re greeted with genuine smiles rather than harried efficiency. Even the menu bends slightly toward local preferences—you can order a basket of fries alongside a meal featuring two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, a combination reflecting small-town Read more…

Address: 123 Merchant St, Ste. Genevieve, MO 63670 Phone: (573) 608-5002 About Pat’s: Pat Schaaf has been a fixture in downtown Sainte Geneviève for a while now. Growing up around Pat’s cooking, her sons caught the bug and have opened venues of their own. DeWayne has three well-lauded eateries in Cape Girardeau: Celebrations, Ebb and Flow Fermentations, and Goose and Gander. Kenny just took over Brix Urban Winery up the block from Pat’s Pastries, and his cooking is featured in regular events there. Both Pat’s and Brix feature craft brews from DeWayne’s Ebb and Flow in Cape Girardeau. Aside from this lovely story about her family’s successes, Pat’s little pastry shop is just about as homey as it gets. It’s in the heart of the downtown action next to Audubon’s Hotel and Restaurant and right across the street from Sara’s Ice Cream. As is mentioned, the little café starts the day serving pastries, traditional breakfast options, and a no-frills coffee and transitions into a soup and sandwich lunch spot during the lunch hour. Featuring a weekly special item that ranges from BLTs to curries, and even Gumbo, Pat’s is a great option when you’re in town. Read more…
