Or “meet” folks portraying the well-to-do, or the not-so-well-to-do, residents of Ste. Geneviève’s history before 1880? At the Déjà vu Spirit Reunion, on the 4th Saturday in October from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., visitors will experience these stories and more as the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Geneviève hosts its annual event in the historic Memorial Cemetery. Ste. Genevieve Levee Wildlife Refuge: Where Flood Defense Becomes Eden Between downtown’s brick facades and the Mississippi River’s dark embrace, more than 200 acres of bottomland forest, wetland, and open field transform a massive levee—built in response to catastrophic flood—into sanctuary where white-tailed deer browse at dawn, great blue herons hunt the shallows with patient stillness, and bald eagles perch through winter within towering cottonwoods overlooking the great river itself. Dedicated in 2021 after seven years of collaborative vision between the City of Ste. Genevieve, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, both levee districts, Missouri Department of Conservation, and Army Corps of Engineers, this refuge embodies something rare: infrastructure born from disaster transformed into blessing, flood protection reimagined as habitat, human engineering serving wildlife rather than dominating it. Here, along levee-top pathways and primitive trails descending toward the river’s edge, visitors encounter what 290 years of Ste. Milice Encampment – 18th-Century Living History in Sainte Geneviève Twice yearly—typically the second Saturday in April and October—the grounds of the LeMeilleur House transform into working 18th-century military camp as the Ste. Geneviève Militia, Inc. hosts the Milice Encampment, bringing colonial-era French and Spanish frontier life to vivid reality. This free, family-friendly living history event (9:30 AM-4 PM) operated by the Centre for French Colonial Life invites visitors of all ages to explore authentic demonstrations including gun building, chair seat weaving, spinning, and leatherwork, while children participate in hands-on period crafts and activities. Experience direct, engaging immersion in the skills and traditions that shaped early Sainte Geneviève—no ropes, no glass cases, no museum distance. Just artisans working in period dress, demonstrating 18th-century craftsmanship, answering questions, and welcoming curiosity about daily life when French colonists and Spanish administrators defended Missouri’s oldest settlement.
