Or “meet” folks portraying the well-to-do, or the not-so-well-to-do, residents of Ste. Geneviève’s history before 1880? At the Déjà vu Spirit Reunion, on the 4th Saturday in October from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., visitors will experience these stories and more as the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Geneviève hosts its annual event in the historic Memorial Cemetery. Hickory Canyons Natural Area, Sprott Road Ste. Geneviève, MO 63670 Lamotte sandstone formed box canyons here from the sandy beaches of a shallow ocean that existed 500 million years ago. Millions of years of erosion and uplift of the Ozark Plateau exposed the sandstone we see today. After a rain event, a wet-weather waterfall can be enjoyed from the end of the 1/4 mile hiking trail on the east side of the county road. Another 1-plus mile trail loops through a canyon on the west side of Sprott Road. In the winter, the bluffs drip with icicles that sparkle in the sun. This area is botanically rich, supporting glacial relics, species that were more common in Missouri 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. Since then, the climate has warmed, forcing some species to inhabit micro-climates that mimic the cool, moist conditions of glacial times. Living History at the Linden House – Step Into the Past Every Saturday from late March through early November, the Linden House opens its doors to offer something rare and wonderful: the chance to experience French Creole colonial life not as distant history locked behind velvet ropes, but as living, breathing, tactile reality. This isn’t passive observation—it’s active engagement with the past, where visitors of all ages can touch, try, and truly understand how people lived, worked, and entertained themselves in early 19th-century Ste. Genevieve. A House That Tells Many Stories The Linden House itself embodies the layered history of Ste. Genevieve. Built in stages from 1811/1812 through the 1930s, the structure reflects how families adapted and expanded their homes across generations, responding to changing needs, prosperity, and architectural fashions. The earliest portions date to just after the Louisiana Purchase, when French Creole families were navigating the transition from Spanish and French rule to American governance. Later additions show how the property evolved as the 19th century progressed and eventually entered the 20th century. This architectural palimpsest—where different eras exist within a single structure—makes the Linden House particularly well-suited for living history interpretation. Magnolia Hollow Drive Ste. Geneviève, MO 63670 Magnolia Hollow Conservation Area’s rugged 1,740-acre area is bordered by Establishment Creek and Schmidt’s Island and the Mississippi River. This recreation and outdoor lover’s paradise has steep bluffs and scenic river views. Eagles are commonly sighted along the river in the winter months. Pickle Springs Natural Area, Highway AA Ste. Geneviève, MO 63670 Call us at 573-883-3603 Pickle Springs has been designated a Natural Landmark by the National Park Service for its biological and geological values as an undisturbed site. A two-mile trail named the “Trail Through Time” winds through the park and guides the visitor through 500 million-year-old geologic wonders carved in sandstone. The trail features clear streams, cool canyons, spectacular bluff views, and “The Slot,” a crevice marked with holes, pockets, and ridges. Visitors must climb through the ”Keyhole” to descend to the creek below. Twin footbridges cross Bone Creek and pass Mossy Falls. The park is a primitive natural area and does not have services. Ste. Genevieve – Modoc Ferry – A River Crossing with Deep Roots For well over two centuries, a ferry crossing has connected the Missouri and Illinois shores of the Mississippi River near Ste. Genevieve, making it one of the oldest continuously operating transportation routes in the American Midwest. Today’s Ste. Genevieve – Modoc Ferry carries on a tradition that stretches back to the very earliest days of European settlement in the region—a living link to the frontier era when the Mississippi was both highway and boundary. A Petition Written in French: 1798 The story of this ferry crossing begins in 1798, when residents of Ste. Genevieve formally petitioned for the establishment of a ferry service across the mighty Mississippi. The petition itself was written in French—the language of commerce, government, and daily life in this thriving French colonial river town. At that time, Ste. Genevieve was already a well-established community, one of the most important settlements in Upper Louisiana, and the need for reliable river transportation was essential for trade, communication, and connection with settlements on the Illinois side. History comes alive in Ste. Geneviève with the annual Encampment, an 18th-century re-enactment event. The Encampment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center for French Colonial Life. The living history camp will include children’s games, colonial skills demonstrations and colonial crafts and trades such as gun building, chair seat weaving, spinning, leatherwork, and more. The Ste. Geneviève Grape During the 1800s, Ste. Geneviève had its own type of grape. It went by various names, Ste. Geneviève, Amoureux, Red Elben, and American Rulander. It was grown extensively in the Hermann MO and Ohio areas. Today, it is no longer grown. Ste. Geneviève people have been making wine for its entire existence. Originally, the early French made wine from wild grapes growing up in the trees. The phrase, making the vintage with a hatchet, referred to the practice of cutting down trees in order to get to the grapes. The wine was also made from local fruits and berries. Many locals still make their own wine. Today, Ste. Geneviève County is home to numerous wineries along the Route de Vin Trail. Read more...
